Jim Shepherd was certainly a first class player, but, I think technically, Roger Webster is a fair bit ahead and he has a phenominally cultured and rounded sound that Jim never had.

Remember John, Jim Shepherd played a gas pipe compared to Roger and Phil !!!! for overall quality it has to be the Bo'ness man for me (still registered with Kinneil remember). HOWEVER, my old teacher will tell tell you Willie Lang outdoes the lot of them !!!!!

The thing is Dave if the guy had, had the sense to play a cornet instead of a gas pipe, just think how much better his sound would have been.............and his gas bills would have been much lower...........all round result!!!

I agree technically webster is better but musically Shepherd i better, and me being a young player i want to play just like Jim Shepherd, if i never heard the record of shepherd i would not be playing the cornet today so thats why he is the best for me

I have an old 33 in the loft, High Peak by Dyke. There's a recording of Jim Shepherd playing Pandora, his triple tonguing is incredible, it's almost like the alert on an old trimphone !

Maybe not the best principal at Dyke (cos thats jim shepard) but If were talking about all round greatness it has to be maurice murphy. he is an absolutley stunning player and has been for the past 40 odd years.
Just think nearly every movie soundtrack from the past 30 years its maurice murphy playing trumpet, he's 60odd now and he's still playing with LSO, Robbie Williams and the likes.
A true great of the trumpet and cornet, thats no slant on the others who are all super players in there own right!
