Only 7 bands competing in the 4th section!
Am I alone in thinking that this is extremely worrying for brass banding in Scotland?
What can be done to promote brass playing and how can the 4th section bands who are not competing and those that are registered as non-contesting be persuaded to compete / change status to contesting??

The question is, are bands not competing in the 4th section because of a lack of players or a lack of desire to contest? Or both? I know that there are a few bands up north that have almost a full compliment and do not contest, mainly due to apathy about contesting as a whole! Not too sure how you could persuade them to compete though, also you have to ask if contesting is a "good thing" for them too. There's a slightly blinkered view that contesting is a really beneficial thing that you only opt out from if you can't get a band together. To be honest, there are pros and cons - by contesting you improve the standard, but can lose something by the nature of it, both from an enjoyment and sometimes a musical point of view. Having said that, 7 bands in the 4th section is VERY worrying for contesting in Scotland - down in London there are 25 entries!!!! Must say though, it's great to see Turriff back to competing again!!

Competing bands attention is drawn to the slight change to the instruction on the website regarding the use of CD players for the Championship section. Competing bands are advised that they may now use their own battery operated CD players if they so wish.
