Tom, I take it from your remarks that you don't class the Caird Hall as "anywhere decent". Caird Hall is fine for me, no probs. As Bruce pointed out , i just could't resist another dig at the financial aspect of holding a contest at a decent venue. Maybe you could let us know the difference in price between the Caird Hall , and the royal Concert Hall?

I wouldn't have imagined the cost difference between the Caird Hall and Royal Concert Hall would be that big?? Both are major concert venues, regularly performed at by the professional Scottish National Companies (RSNO, BBC, SCO etc) so surely both would be in a similar price bracket? I always thought the Caird Hall and Royal Concert Hall were equally as nice to play in or visit. The only reson I could think the Caird Hall would be much cheaper is because it's in Dundee... The hall is very nice, but the city that surrounds it is very different - you'd have to pay me to go back there again!!

For me the Royal Concert hall is to big for a brass band to fill with sound, that hall is built for orchestras with 90 players in it not a brass band with 35, i like the caird hall tho nice to play in, but for me the bets is falkirk.

I didnt like Falkirk as much but that was the first regional venue i played at so may have just been my nerves... I like the Caird Hall I thought it had a good sound

I always thought it was the opposite way around... The concert hall for me was always much easier to hear detail in than the Caird Hall - the accoustics of the RCH were engineered to do just that, whereas the Caird Hall is just massive so it's hard to hear everything as precisely (it's famously the venue where the Red Arrows rehearse when it's raining!) Before any Dundonians get aggressive with my last post, I would like to add that I have had very bad experiences in Dundee, not just with National Finals concerts and last places, but also with an aggressive idiot, getting lamped in the face (to the immortal line "git oot o ma way or ahl f****n cheb ye") and bottles/cars/police so perhaps I'm slightly biased!

I think I needed some anger management - the w****r who spouted that immortal line did it completely unprovoked, then lamped me in the face (pus if you're from fife)! I think he said that to me, I had no idea what the hell he was on about, and he took it as a challenge... Obviously irritated as he'd spent his giro all in one night! Needless to say, I lobbed an empty bottle of vodka at the guy, it missed and smashed a window of a car.... £200 that cost me, and it's all because of Dundee!!!!! Not that I'm bitter or anything....

For me the best place to play in Scotland is the concert hall. Great acoustics for detailed playing, and always clear at all dynamics. Caird Hall is a decent venue, but I think it might struggle if there was a really detailed test piece played there. I don't have any problems with Falkirk and Motherwell (better than the RAH which = a big toilet to play in)!

Not likely - I'm back in the UK now, returned to London after my travels! Seems like such a short time... Incidentally, I am a very placid person and not usually one to be dragged into that kind of boisterous dispute, but I was utterly plastered and the guy whacked me! Saying that, I'm still convinced the reason the bottle missed is because I throw like a woman
