Any golfers out there? Perhaps more to the point, any golfers out there interested in talking about the finer points of the game on here? It's a long shot I know.
I've recently taken up the game again after numerous failed attempts, but I'm not really making the kind of progress I'd like. Has anyone ever taken any lessons from a pro? Did you feel they helped?
Golf's not a game to be bad at and that's an understatement.

I took four lessons from the Pro at Murrayshall Golf Club in Perth a while ago - he said "what do you want to achieve" I replied - "I'd like to hit the ball in a straight line" Well he got me doing that and the clubs are sitting in the corner of my office covered in cobwebs now

Sounds like this guy knows his stuff. How good a player were you though when you went to him? Why don't you play now if he managed to get your game straightened out?

I dont play golf and to be honest had to get it explained to me 3 times by a rather paitient ex... still I now have the general gist of the game and know lots who play it... Is it not got alot to do with hand eye co-ordination? I would love to go see a game played by the worlds best see what makes the game so intense... I'd love to learn but I think I'd be shown off the premises within the first 5 minutes and told not to return. Happy to be a caddy though

Is it not got alot to do with hand eye co-ordination? Indeed it has. It's all too easy to become bogged down in the technicalities of the game though. That's what seems to be happening to me again. When I started playing again recently I was hitting a not bad ball, probably because my expectations weren't too high and I wasn't thinking about it too much. Now I've started watching the Golf Channel and reading the instructional pages of golf magazines and the 'paralysis by analysis' has started to set in. It wouldn't be so bad if when you hit a good shot you could recognize what it was about the shot that you did right/ different from all the ones you did wrong. It's a great feeling when everything falls in to place but it doesn't happen too often.

I play, but my handicap is that I stand to near the ball.... After I've hit it!!!! I haven't had any lesson's of a Pro, but I know of people who have, and it took them about a year to get back to the standard they where at B4 the lessons. From what I now about most Pro's is that they all try and make you have the perfect swing, instead of working with what you have got. It's abit like a music teacher getting you to move the position of your mouth piece from where it sits naturally to the perfect middle of the lip( couldn't spell embuchure)!! ;D

Yes, it's a good point you make. I suppose it doesn't matter what you do with your swing so long as you return square to the ball at impact. That's the hard bit though. Personally I'd like to learn an orthodox swing that's repeatable and works well, even if that means overhauling everything that I'm doing right now.

TO hit a ball in a straight line.............(assuming you can actually swing a club and make contact ;D )
Take your stance etc take out another club and line it along where your feet are stood ie in direction you are hitting ball so its touching your toes....step back and see which direction club is pointing....thats where you were aiming!!
OK, so you may need a few more pointers but thats the one thing i always check....and i aint played golf in years. (was at driving range with Dad last week and can still crack it a mile in a straight line so it works for me!!!)
Enjoy it - thats the main thing!

Hey! Cheeky begger!!
Just get yourself down the driving range, if yr beginner then a few lessons to point you on the right way are probably a good idea.....
Although im sure my ability is down to pure natural talent ;D
