My wife and I were privileged to attend a concert at the Usher Hall Edinburgh to celebrate the life of a very unique young man, Brian Duguid. He was the Arts Manager for West Lothian, and through his inspiration, dedication and commitment made their music service one of the finest in Great Britain, a shinning example to all. It has been my privilege and pleasure to have known Brian since his student days at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, when he also played principal trombone for my band Kirkintilloch Silver Band. This is when he met his future wife Kitty, and one knew immediately that they were right for each other, and would make a superb team. I will always remember the dry Aberdonian wit, the wicked smile, and the glint in his eye, as but one part of this unique musician who was taken from us far too early.
The concert featured musicians from far and wide to pay tribute to Brian and contained some of his favourite music which was also significant to his short life, and was compeered by Charlie Mains of Dundee. Five ensembles took part, a brass band, wind band, choir, big band, four pipers, and produced some fabulous music to suit all tastes; featuring an array of well known conductors Nigel Boddice MBE, Andy Duncan, Russel Cowieson, Bruce Pearson, Bryan Allen, Stuart French and Tony Swainson. Three soloists were featured, the lovely voice of Colette Ruddy, the talented euphonium player Richard Kidd, and the fantastic jazz trumpeter Ryan Quigley.
I’m sure you enjoyed listening to every note Brian, and God Bless you for all the happy memories.
