Could I humbly suggest to the SBBA to allow all 25 brass players to double on other instruments during an Entertainments Contest.
All 10 cornets able to double on trumpets, flugels, piccolo trumpets.
Baritone & euphonium players doubling on trombone and vice versa.
Even horn players doubling on French Horn.
Just think of the colours of sound we could add to the band sound.

Interesting Topic this one.
On the 2005 Brass in Concert Champs DVD, there's a few added instruments like a keyboard. And sellers do a nice performance of Circle of Life with African Chanting which works well.
However, while the addition of more colours in the Brass Band should be welcomed, I think, (and I'm talking here from a composers point of view) that certain consideration is needed so that it doesn't just sound like adding more instruments for the sake of it.
If it's done in good taste and arranged with a bit of thought it can be made to work - to get the best effect, you really need a composer or arranger to write a piece specifically for the band for the contest.
I think the other thing that needs to be taken into consideration is we're dealing with an ensemble ruled by Saxhorns - even the cornets are Saxhorns (as outlined in Cecil Forsyth's 'Orchestration') so adding Trumpets and French Horns is a danger area and one that I feel should be entered into with a great deal of caution.
So, doubling? Not something I would be rushing to do.....but a composition using the new colours (Trumpets, French Horns, etc) to give them individual parts, then yes, a GOOD musical craftman can make it work!

Kingdom Brass did that at the West Lothian Challenge for their Mozart number. They had all sorts, mellophone, french horn and trumpets. There are rules governing instrumentation but I see no reason why these cannot be relaxed for an entertainment contest. I would be in support of such a move as long as it was understood that there would only ever be 25 brass players on stage.

Darrol Barry, Philip Sparke, and Goff Richards; to name but three who would do a superb job, whether original composition or arrangements. Dafydd ap Iago
