After the Fife contest there were a few saying how hard a blow it is playing the old March, Hymn and Testpiece format. I personally was bushed as were most of the band. With everyone now playing Hymn tunes that are a long blow and testpieces getting longer I was wondering what others thought about it?

Agree with you on some points here Eck. A march should be manageable by all brass bands, after all, it is traditional but what about the D.C. - Do you make it or not. Personally, at Fife we didn't and nothing was said about it but we have played there before and been criticised for not making it. Hymn tunes I think are where the problem lies. When was the last time a band went to a contest and played three verses from the red book - I can't remember. We all go for an arrangemement these days (I'm guilty too) which usually has a massive FFF part somewhere in it and it can really take it out of the band especially if they have a 12-15 test piece next. Maybe we need to get back to simple, tuneful hymn tunes and see what happens. It certainly wouldn't do the tuning any harm

We did the DC then Crimond which is mega loud and high at the end section then a testpiece of about 17 mins. Agree with the old red book job. Number 7 everytime for me.
