Has anyone used those plastic Kelly mouthpieces? I have a white one that glows in the dark. Does nothing for your playing but it's a novelty for about three seconds. I guess it does what it says on the packet, ie. It remains at a fairly constant temperature when you're playing in extremes of temperature, but all in all I think they're a bit of a gimmick really. I mean, has anyone ever had a mouthpiece stick to their lips? I doubt it. That said, they are fairly inexpensive so if you fancy getting one it's not going to burst the bank.

I've never had a mouthpiece stick to me but, when you play bass in the cold, it's no fun having half your face numbed in one go thanks to a frozen mouthpiece ;D

Personally its all down to the sound that a player can produce irrespective of what mouthpiece they are using. I certainly agree with that! I would never ask a player to change mouthpieces to a wick just for the sake of it, I have only done it in the past when the player`s sound doesn`t blend. At the end of the day though, you can have someone on a wick who sounds rank so it`s not a black and white issue! I wouldn`t care if someone was playing on a flat piece of sheet metal with a hole drilled through it if they had a decent tone!

I use an SM3.5 having changed from a bog standard Wick 4BS and it's definately made a bit of a difference to my sound at higher and lower registers.

Scott, were you the one in the tweed bonnet ? Back on track - after earlier hinting on bach 4 or 5 G's in this section I've made a remarkable discovery, not the mouthpiece itself of course BUT, the Josef Klier 4 BB ( Brett Baker) has just saved my life in switching from Bass to tenor, it's so comfortable. Brett Baker designed, its a hybrid. Uses Bach rim and cup dimensions with a Denis Wick 4BL shank - magic !
