That's a good question Alan. Perhaps some folk members from Championship and 1st section bands would like to comment on their respective bands' decisions not to compete in this contest.

I think as previously discussed in another thread, it is becoming more amd more difficult to get "bums on seats" regularly for band s to compete at contests. I presume when the invites come in for the various contests the are announced to bands, then the hands get raised to say they can,t make it. I think its as simple as player availability being the problem.(also school holidays in October may also be a factor).
Lots of players from different bands are on this forum who are not competing this weekend, so maybe they will have more accurate answers to why their specific bands can,t make this contest.

There is also, or at least up until recently, a plethora of contests about this time. You have just come off of the lower section nationals and are looking forward to the RAH and early in November there is Brass in Concert too.
It could be of course that a lot of the higher section bands being based further west than Dunfermline, it's former home, just don't have any great urge to travel to Fife for a contest with minimal prize money.

I have no idea. I just copied and pasted last years awards as a guide and response to your question, so have to presume it will be similar this year.

Really? Like I said it doesnt really bother me but is that no a bit tight? A prize fund of £525 may appear a bit miserly when compared to the likes of Brass in the Park and Land O'Burns but when you consider the finances of the association you can see that they are putting up a hefty percentage of their income for member bands to try and win. The contest needs sponsorship to enable it to grow otherwise it will always stay as it currently is.

Money isnt everything anyway. I'd rather have a trophy to show off... its a little hard to look good with photographs of money. Also its rather hard to have a celebratory drink out of a cheque... much easier with a trophy!

We are looking forward to a good day in Falkirk - although it's been hard for me to explain to folk that, "yes, it's the Fife Charities," but, "no, Falkirk isnae in Fife."!!! Not complaining, though. Falkirk's good for me!

Why not just call it , the Forth Valley Contest. Does any1 know what will happen if the first section winners finish 3rd overall. What happens to that £50? Its a crying shame that we cannot get more chapionship bands to turn up. After all, money aside there is a trophy or 2 to be won. It does get a bit boring when the same band wins it every year. I would even pay the entry fee for a top band to come and take the prizes other than Kingdom. Only kidding. The prize money just doesn't attract the bigger scottish bands to show up. so Kingdom normally take the spoils. Lets hope there is a good compitition for all sectional prizes. And in the Open Contest.
