8th BORDERS FESTIVAL OF BRASS

Since it was first held in 2000, the Borders Festival of Brass has grown to become a popular and well-respected Borders-wide event, full of good music, entertainment and fun. The 8th Festival is set to take place from 31 August to 20 October and arrangements are well underway thanks to the efforts of the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association. The Festival will see events organised by many of the member bands and will include several exciting concerts, a long-established solo and quartet competition and a brass and percussion workshop for school children.
¡§At this time, our bands here in the Scottish Borders are, collectively, competing at their highest ever level. This is in no doubt due to the positive work and initiatives of the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association and the member bands themselves. The Festival of Brass is another opportunity to promote the fine work our bands do all year round. I am sure that audiences around the Borders, including our younger players, will be inspired by the many performances, which will include several visiting bands, soloists and conductors,¡¨ said Alan Fernie, Association Chairman.
The packed festival programme kicks-off with on Friday 31 August with a joint concert between Galashiels Town Band and Dunfermline Town Band in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels at 7.30pm.
Jumping on to Saturday 15 September and the next event, which will be a concert held by Selkirk Silver Band in Selkirk¡¦s Victoria Hall (7.30pm). This promises to be an exciting programme from the Selkirk Band under their conductor, Richard Duff.
A brand new event for the Festival is a school¡¦s master class featuring world-class euphonium player, Steven Mead. There will be two master classes held in two of the Borders¡¦ secondary schools with brass players from around the region attending.
The next two events will take place on Saturday 22 September and music lovers at both ends of the Borders are in for a real treat. Jedforest Instrumental Band and Abbey Brass (Jedforest) are presenting a concert featuring the world-renowned tubist, Steve Sykes (Jedburgh Town Hall, 7.30pm). That same night St. Ronan¡¦s Silver Band (2nd Section Scottish Champions) will present a joint concert with the top section Champions, The Kirkintilloch Band along with euphonium legend, Steven Mead. (Memorial Hall, Innerleithen, 7.30pm).
The next day (Sunday 23 September) will see a brass and percussion Workshop for school-age children (Langlee Primary School, Galashiels 10.00am-5.00pm). Steve Sykes, the world-renowned tuba player has agreed to conduct the ¡§A band.¡¨ Steve will be joined by John Dickson from Midlothian who will look after the ¡§B band¡¨ while Alan Fernie will lead the ¡§C band.¡¨ The workshop will conclude with a short concert featuring all of the young players at 4.00pm.
On Monday 24 September there will be a concert by St. Boswells Concert Band (St. Boswells Village Hall, 7.30pm). The band is preparing a programme to suit all tastes and will be conducted by Gordon Hitchison.
Tuesday 25 September will see a concert by the Langholm Junior Band. This young, up and coming Band will present their concert in the Buccleuch Centre, Langholm at 7.00pm
The annual Borders Slow Melody contest will take place on Sunday 30 September. Organised by Selkirk Silver Band it is to be held in the local High School commencing at 12 noon (draw, 11.30am). This will be a showcase of some of the best brass instrumentalist in the area.
Into October and local players with the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland will hold a fundraising concert on Friday 19 October in the Mission Hall, Jedburgh at 7.30pm. The NYBBS is planning to celebrate its 50th Anniversary next year with a trip to Japan and this event will help them on their way.
The final event of the festival will be held in Hawick on Saturday 20 October. Hawick Saxhorn Band¡¦s Cabaret will take place in the Town Hall at 7.30pm. As well as the as the local band, the cabaret will feature guest artistes, Scocha, in this popular annual event in the town.
