Academy Brass Band Day to feature Scotland’s first all-female brass band.
The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama is getting set to play host to its first Brass Band Day on Sunday, April 22nd, 2007.
The day will consist of a series of rolling events - on the hour, every hour - commencing at 3.00pm, all taking place in the main concert hall of the Academy.
First up will be the Academy Brass Band - directed by Bryan Allen, Head of Brass at the RSAMD and main catalyst for the day’s events - whose programme will celebrate the music of the late Sir Malcolm Arnold.
The academy connection will be continued at 4.00pm, when the new Director of Music, Jim Gourlay, will lead a masterclass focusing on the Art of Accompaniment. In this the perspective of both soloist and conductor will be explored. This event is a National Association of Brass Band Conductors promotion, and all NABBC members are encouraged to attend.
At 5.00pm, and surely one of the days highlights, will be the debut appearance of Girls Allowed, Scotland’s first All-Star, All-Female Brass Band. To be selected and directed by Ray Tennant their programme will showcase the music of Scotland’s top composers and arrangers.
From 6.00pm, the spotlight falls on youth as Nigel Boddice directs the ever-popular West Lothian Schools Brass Band in an exciting programme of folk music from around the world.
Prior to their appearance at the European Championships in Birmingham, the Scottish Co-op Band, led by Allan Ramsay, will offer an insight into both the set test and their own choice test for the contest, when they appear in concert at 7.00pm.
8.00pm will herald the grand finale concert, with the Kirkintilloch Band taking centre stage, who, no doubt, will bring the day’s events to a rousing climax.
All in all, a day of brass banding treats for everyone to enjoy – and all for FREE!
More details will become available closer to the event, but in the meantime further information can be obtained from:
