Do you think that the rankings reflect the true state of Scottish banding?
Our top three bands are at 9, 12 and 13 then it's a long way down before the next Scottish band comes in at 34. Are the Co, Whitburn and Kirkie really that much better than the rest? In my humble opinion the answer to that is Yes.
Since I stopped playing I've actually started going to contests to listen to bands (not just to play then head off to the pub) and I've been quite taken aback at the difference in quality between the top three and the rest.
So if this is really the case, can the other bands improve to challenge the best or just carry on as at present and hope to cause the occasional upset or just be happy to be best of the rest.

A good topic Jim and results dont lie but I think the same can be said about the top English and Welsh bands too.

The rankings are biased in favour of the top three because they invariably attend the MAJOR contests, Nationals, Open, European, Brass in Concert and now the Masters. The points they get for taking part in these prestigious events far outweigh those available to other Scottish Bands. Having said that I tend to agree with Jim. Co-op, Whitburn and Kirkie are streets ahead of everyone else in Scotland at present. There is then a jump to the middle grouping any of whom can top the rest at any given contest.

You must then ask why the three bands are at these points gathering contests.................I think it's because they've qualified to attend them.
Look at the British Open and its qualifiers, we've got three bands in the main contest then not even one in the Grand Shield, three in the Senior Cup and two (I think) in the Senior Trophy. This is surely another example of the gap that exists between "the best" and "the rest".

In reply to James, in Scotland we are regarded as a region and England has about 10 (could be more could be less) and so more bands qualify for the National finals. As for the Spring Cup it is always a bit of a lottery what bands attend and it's not easy to climb up the various formats. We have Nitten as our champions but they are not allowed into the Shield.

Don't really get your point Alec. What happens down in England surely doesn't account for the difference in standards I feel exists in our country.
All the Scottish bands in the British Open had to qualify from the Grand Shield.

I thought you were meaning the amount of bands down South who are at the major finals Jim. Take your point about the standard between the top 3 and the rest.

We have Nitten as our champions but they are not allowed into the Shield. Not allowed in the Shield? Were they not in that contest a few years ago? You cant expect an automatic place just because you happen to win the Scottish... Spring Festival is all about consistency, if Nitten had that then they would still be in the Grand Shield surely.....
