Hi John,
We'll see what sort of response we get, then hopefully we can take you up on your kind offer.

Oops missed it in my reply. Horn section please. I'm sure we will be able to find you a position in the horn section. The response is rather slow yet, but we've had two or three showing interest. Definitely a great flugel player and a couple of cornets. Come on ladies and gentlemen where's the enthusiasm from the bottom end? Dafydd.

To all those that have shown interest in the All Star Band may I recommend the following. Having spoken to Nigel about it, it should be very interesting; so if you're free give it your support please.
Dafydd
The NABBC (Scotland) is organising a repertoire session with a composite band to take place on Sunday 1st October, 2.00pm - 5.00pm at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, Glasgow
The organisers have informed 4BR that players are required to help form a 'composite' band for the afternoon of Sunday 1st October, from 2pm.
The session will be used to look at, rehearse, and run through (previously un-used) works by Scottish and European composers.
Number of works "Our intention for this event is to gather together players from various bands to form one composite band, to try out, rehearse, and play through a number of works for brass band that may not have had too much of an airing in the past"
The organisers told 4BR: "Our intention for this event is to gather together players from various bands to form one composite band, to try out, rehearse, and play through a number of works for brass band that may not have had too much of an airing in the past.
We may also have some brand new works available to us from Scottish and Continental composers, giving everyone (players and conductors alike) the opportunity to get to know the music of some of our up-and-coming composers. This also gives players the chance to meet, play together and discuss the merits and de-merits of the music 'on show', and hopefully enjoy the fun of being together."
Personalities from the Scottish banding scene who will be on hand to conduct include Nigel Boddice, Allan Ramsay, Tony Swainson, Raymond Tennant and others.
Interested?
If you are interested in taking part please contact Raymond Tennant as soon as possible on:- mobile: 07860 102708 e-mail: raytennant@ntlworld.com

Hi All,
Just to keep you up to date. I have had an excellent response from members of the forum. I approached Peter Fraser Sec. SBBA with the idea and believe it was brought up at the AGM where I am led to believe it had a favourable response. I have been asked to put a piece in the programme for the Scottish Open on the 26th November, which should reach most of the brass musicians in Scotland to see what sort of response we get from the movement. If all is favourable I will then approach people to put a management structure together; make approaches to distinguished orchestral conductors to see their response, and form the band. Choose a worthy cause and propose a venue for the first concert. I think it will be January before we can assess the response and propose a Concert probably May or June. If you've any questions please message me and I will respond.

Hi Stuart,
Unfortunately there was insufficient response mainly from the middle of the band. My apologies to every one for not informing you all, but was rather disheartened by it all. I also decided last Sept to learn to play the bodhran, and went to night school for group lesson. I kept catching chest infections from Sept through to January when I finally realised I was picking up the germs left by the kids in the day time. I stopped going at the end of January and it has taken till now for me to pick back up having had the immune system set back a great deal. So once again my apologies to all.

Mr J, Pity about the band not taking shape, but more importantly, glad to hear you are on the mend.
Is an All Star 10 piece out of the question, and would there still be gaps.?David James Versatile Brass? I still think there is a void to fill in Scottish banding, and a group like this maybe ideal.

Hi Stuart, I'm flattered that you think it should be called David James Versatile Brass, but I can see a boat load of young people scratching their heads and saying who the hell is that, ;D If someone forms it it should be called Scottish VB. I wanted to form the band so that the players could enjoy making music without being under the pressure of contesting, and to use what little influence I have with orchestral conductors, to come and enjoy conducting a brass band and feel the vibrancy that can only be obtained by brass instruments. It would also be something that could continue long after I've gone. I believe Scotland can and has produced some of the finest brass players. Just look at the top two in charge of the Scottish Royal Academy of Music, John Wallace and James Gourlay, two superb musicians. DJ
